The third round of the FIM World Quadcross Championship took place over the weekend of the 9th and 10th of May at Kleinhau, Germany. Series leader Patrick Turrini took the overall and increased his championship lead. Harry Walker finished fourth and third to finish on the podium and third in the series, while Mark McLernon’s fifth and sixth were enough to give him fifth overall and fourth in the standings. Dafydd Davies secured eighth and tenth, placing him 8th overall on the day.
Race 1As the gate dropped, home rider Jordi Niclas Gieler claimed the holeshot and led the way for the opening laps. Manfred Zienecker and Kevin Saar, from 22nd and 24th gate picks, were on the cusp of top 10 positions by the end of the opening lap. Sylvain Petit made a fantastic start and was keeping a mass of riders including McLernon, Walker, Mike van Grinsven and Turrini at bay.
A few laps later, van Grinsven seized the opportunity to take the lead of the race and, then Gieler lost positions to Turrini and McLernon. Zienecker was riding like a man possessed and was inside the top six when an engine problem forced him to return back to the pits, dropping him way down the order to 22nd, and a lap behind the leader. Petit was promoted to sixth, but a flat tyre forced him to return to the pits.
Turrini was well out in-front, with van Grinsven unchallenged in second position. With a few laps to go Walker, in third, had Kevin Saar to contend with. The door opened, and Saar went through to put himself into the podium placings.
Race 2Gieler was again quickest off the start and kept the hard-charging Walker, Turrini and van Grinsven at bay. From the second row of the gate, Saar and Zienecker were inside the top-12 by the end of lap one, but Zeinecker could not complete the second lap, and was out of the race.
Despite the best efforts from Gieler, Turrini’s challenge proved too much to cope with and the Italian took the lead of the race. Gieler put up a great defence against van Grinsven and Walker, but a slight mistake saw him lose traction, almost completing a full spin, and lose both positions in one move. At the mid-point of the race, it appeared that Walker had van Grinsven covered, but the Dutchman knew where to pounce and relegated Walker to third, with the Brit having no comeback on this occasion. Van Grinsven went on to post the fastest lap of the day to put himself in the wheel tracks of Turrini in the closing stages.
Walker finished third, with Saar battling through the pack once more, to put himself fourth ahead of Theo Gourmaud. McLernon was sixth.
