Mark McLernon has been steadily chipping away at the overall standings in the newly-formed World Quadcross Championship and was rewarded with an impressive second overall at round 7 in Madona, Latvia, last weekend, the 25th and 26th of July.

The race was never going to be easy with tough track conditions and many local riders in the mix, who were used to the sandy rough conditions. Before the weekend McLernon was in fourth place in the World QX series behind Estonia’s Kevin Saar, Italian Patrick Turrini and German rider Manfred Zienecker.

The weekend started off strong for the Irish rider with a superb second place finish in the qualifying race on Saturday giving him nine valuable championship points. McLernon carried this strong form on to Sunday’s races with a fourth place in the first moto and third in race two. This was enough to give him second overall on the day and a leg up to third in the series, just five points behind injured rider Turrini, in second, and 53 points behind championship leader Saar.

With two rounds remaining in the series, and a total of 120 points up for grabs, the popular Irishman still has all to play for. Round eight of the championship is this coming weekend in Lithuania and with Turrini still dealing with a wrist injury, McLernon is more than capable of taking control of second place in the world championship!
