Scotsman Murray Graham did well to start, never mind finish, the opening round of the European Quadcross Championship in Portugal over the weekend. He was still suffering from the after-effects of a first race, first corner tangle at the British Championship opener at Ironworks last weekend.

Those who know Murray know he never gives up and he set off for Portugal regardless of injury.

Qualifying eighth, he fought hard and fast to finish ninth, on the tail of Mark McLernon for much of the race. On the second moto he was up to sixth but, halfway through the race, he had to slow when he unexpectedly caught some grip and landed in a hole, twisting his back.

Finishing a credible twelfth overall and bagging a valuable sixteen points, Graham said; “Given the injury I was carrying from last weekend, my main objective was simply to finish. There were a lot of positives this weekend; I was delighted to finish that first race, despite the pain I was in.

“Also, I’m running a new quad and we made big improvements to the machine set up over the weekend. I am feeling more and more comfortable on it. Racing here is so different from racing at home. The pace in Europe is so intense. There is no room for error.”

Reflecting on his recent ups and downs, he continued; “It’s been a rough couple of weeks. I’d like to say a big thank you to all the people around me for sticking by me, no matter what. Among them are One23MX, Graham Construction, Mark McLernon, Rip n Roll, my trainer Kev Freeflow McGuire, in fact, everyone who helps me.

“Now we will now push on for the next round in Heerde in Holland”.
