NETT GETS OFF TO FLYING START WITH BRIAN WINROW MEMORIAL

April 17th, 2019.

NETT Quad Championship 2019
Rounds 1 & 2, Wooley Grange, 13th& 14th April 2019

Defending Champion Murray Graham won the Brian Winrow Memorial on Saturday at Wooley Grange, with a 2-1-2 across the three motos.

The battle for the podium of this Northern series was fast and furious, with Lorne Sinclair taking an early lead in the first race, followed closely by Graham, Paul Broomhead and Southern interloper Harry Walker. They were nose-to-tail for the duration, setting the standard for a spectacular double header with close racing across the classes all weekend.

In the second race of day one, Graham took his win in the championship class with Walker on his tail and Sinclair third. Behind them, Jack Holmes, Michael Brewis and Lindsey Duke fought hard. Pushing Graham all the time, Walker went on win moto three, whilst Brewis held third despite being hounded endlessly by Broomhead and Sinclair.

All three British U21 contenders took to the podium at the end of day one, with Murray on top, Walker second and Sinclair third. Come day two Walker was in his stride winning all three motos, while Graham and Sinclair took second and third overall ahead of Ayrton Knowles who showed his potential with a 4-4-3 on the day.

The support classes were action packed too. With Adult Supports riding alongside over-40s Veterans Steve Pinder and Richie Cornett were mixing it with a posse of young guns including Jack Young, Zak Beevers, Chris Morris, JJ Readman and, on day two, George Oliver and Marcus Sprayson. Young took top honours from Beevers on day one with a 3-1-1 while the powerful looking Morris won day two from Young with an impressive 1-1-2. George Oliver was on the third step on the podium with a gremlin free day giving him a 3-2-3.

The over-40s podium was the same both days with Pinder first, Cornett second and local lad Stevie Bling Cain third. Meanwhile the popular Uncle Albert was also in the fray, taking sixth position on day two – his birthday!

The junior and youth classes attracted riders from Northern Ireland, the very North of Scotland and South of England. Following in his brother’s wheels, Alfie Walker took four wins from six races, giving away only two to fellow 250 Open class rider Robbie Wood. The super-fast pair led the pack of 250cc hybrid, modified and standard bikes all weekend, with Dylan McKenna and Chad Beevers dicing for position just behind them. Ethan Best nearly had the perfect score in the 250 Modified, until Jordan Wright got the better of him on the last race of the day. Cameron Penrose and Rory Wood came out top in the 250 Standard and 150 Geared classes on both days.

The diminutive Malachy McKenna won the 50cc class, Amelia Talent the 100 Standard and Jay Sams took top points in the 100 modified from a challenging Taylor Hyndman. And, all the way from NI, siblings Adam and Chloe Gibson took first and second in the 100 Geared, Adam clinching top spot on day one with a flying Chloe winning day two.

The weekend’s event counts towards both the NETT and QRS championships; full results will be published on Speedhive.
