ATVS ONLY MCF BRITISH XC CHAMPIONSHIP - ROUND 2 RACE REPORT

April 24th, 2019.

Round 2, 21st April 2019, Champs Park, Brakeshill Farm, Northants

The second round of the Dragon Quad Racing ATVs Only MCF British Quad XC Championship, in association with GML ATV, that took place on Easter Sunday, proved to be something of a bittersweet event as it combined a successful day’s racing with a tribute lap in honour of Katie Hodgson #141.

Prior to the start of the afternoon racing, everyone gathered in the holding area including Katie’s parents Gary and Sara, her sister Sophie and her partner together with other family members, and Katie’s Partner Richard Freestone. Richard, followed by Graham Guy, paid tribute to Katie and then a minute’s silence proceeded a ‘lap for Katie’, led by Katie’s Hunt the Wolf teammates. £1000 was raised on the day and donated towards the Just Giving page - www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/katie-hodgson

The morning race saw a strong turnout of 16 riders for the 1.5-hour youth race that incorporated big motocross jumps, fast sections and tight technical woods. Tom Bainbridge took the win just ahead of Daniel Barrow in second and Lewis Humphris in third. James Maybury took the honours in the Youth 250 class, followed by Charlie Wheatley second, and Mckenzie Evans third. Louie Holt continued his winning ways by making it two wins from two rounds in the 125 class. Morgan Junge was second and Freddie Robinson rounded out the podium in third. The MINI Quad Race for riders aged five to nine years took place over a shortened course for 30-minutes. Jake Robson took his first win in the 90cc Class with Harriet Mewse once again taking first place in the 50cc class.

The afternoon’s racing got underway immediately after the tribute lap. Sixty-three adults lined up to tackle the four-mile course for two-and-a-half-hours - with the unusually high temperatures it was a tough afternoon for both rider and machine.

Luke Davies was first through turn one, closely followed by Iestyn Rowlands. Rowlands eventually took the lead and was making small gains over Davies, before needing to pit with mechanical issues. This left the way clear for Davies to take his second overall and Expert + win ahead of Kevin Meenagh and Alex Bethell in third. Tiago Gomes was on winning form in the Experts, with Jacob Woodward in second and Zack Hull third. In a competitive Clubman class Will Dunlop took his first win after moving up from Sportsman, with Luke Forrester again in the runners-up position and Elizabeth Price an impressive third. After a poor start, Dylan Mckenna made his way to the front of the Sportsman pack and led Josh Talent and Harvey More across the finish line. Lawrence Dascombe took the win in 4x4 Lights with Mark Williams second this time out, and Shaun Wealleans third. In the 4x4 Clubman class, Nick Key took a debut win with Richard Harvey second and Bradley Price rounding out the podium. The 4x4 expert class was as competitive as always, Steve Atkins was back at the front but chased hard by Jason Wildman and Graham Guy.

Round three of the ATVs Only MCF British Quad XC Championship will take place at Manor Farm, Pool Quay, Powys on May the 12th, 2019.
