MCLERNON & DILLON CONTINUE ULSTER BATTLE

May 13th, 2022.

The North Armagh Club hosted the fourth round of the MRA Ulster Youth and Adult Quadcross Championships at the fast and flowing Tandragee Motocross Park on the 7th of April. This round marked the halfway point of the eight-round series.

Following a day and night of rain the competitors were greeted with sunshine for race day and a hillside track in near perfect condition.

In the adult Quad Premier Class, the first race was led off the line by Mark McLernon, followed by David Cowan, Justin Reid, Dean Dillon and visiting competitors Oli Sansom and Murray Graham. Around three or four laps into this first race McLernon’s rear suspension lost its damping and for the next two laps the reigning British and Ulster Champ did everything he could to hold off a charging Cowan, who eventually made his way past and into the lead. While all this was going on, Dillon made contact with Reid and was involved in an incident over a jump. However, he was up and back racing within a few seconds. At the end of the 10-lap race, Cowan took the win with a 20-second margin, ahead of McLernon who managed to haul his ill-handling machine across the line in second position. Sansom finished a very close third and Graham was just a further one second back in fourth. Dillon did recover to finish in sixth. Reid suffered after his earlier incident and finished in eleventh position, two laps down but still in the points.

The second and third Quad Premier class races were less. First in races two and three was McLernon, second Dillon, third Reid and fourth Aaron Haslett.

McLernon picked up the Premier Class Overall on the day with Dillon second and Haslett a fine third, just one point ahead of Sansom in fourth.

In the Quad Semi-Expert Class races, Ruairi McCloskey raced to his first Overall Day win of the series, while championship leader Josh McKnight was second and Jack Young claimed third position.

Paul Edgar continued his domination of the adult Clubman Class races when he won all three races and the overall on the day. Mark Mulholland was second and Dean Young completed the top three overall positions in this class.

The Youth Quad races started with the Y1 Automatic Class and saw eight-year-old John Joe Malone, competing for the first time in the MRA Ulster Championship series, race to three straight wins. Current championship leader Jamie Cowan was placed second overall and Ellie Brown finished in a solid third.

Next out was the Y2, 80/100cc Class. Close and exciting racing saw Dean Owns pick up the overall by just three points over Rory Farren in second and Daniel Duddy third.

Finally, in the youth Y3, 200/250cc class, Travis Toye with a first race win and two second place finishes won the overall. The ever-consistent Adam Gibson tied on 51 points with Harry Minish, but a better last race result of third mean Gibson secured the second place slot.

Round 5 of the MRA Ulster Quad Championship will be promoted by the Killinchy Club and held on the 11th of June at Seaforde MX Park.
